Understanding the EPFO Unified Member Portal
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) manages social security and retirement savings for formal sector employees across India. Through the Unified Member Portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in), employees in Odisha can manage their Provident Fund accounts digitally without visiting regional PF offices.
Step 1: How to Activate Your Universal Account Number (UAN)
Your 12-digit UAN is allotted by EPFO and provided on your monthly salary slip. To access your account, you must first activate it:
- Open unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/.
- Under “Important Links” at the bottom right, click “Activate UAN”.
- Enter your 12-digit UAN, Member ID, or Aadhaar Number.
- Enter your Name, Date of Birth, and Mobile Number exactly as registered in your company and Aadhaar records.
- Complete the captcha, click “Get Authorization PIN”, and enter the OTP received on your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Upon activation, a system password is sent via SMS. You can subsequently set your own secure password.
Step 2: How to Download Your EPF Passbook
Note that the passbook portal (passbook.epfindia.gov.in) becomes active approximately 6 hours after UAN activation. Log in with your UAN and password to review monthly employee and employer contributions, interest credited, and total balance.
Step 3: Types of Online EPF Claims
| Claim Form | Purpose & Eligibility | Waiting Period / Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Form 31 (PF Advance) | Partial withdrawal while still employed (illness, house purchase, marriage, education, pandemic relief). | No waiting period; non-refundable advance. |
| Form 19 (Final Settlement) | Complete withdrawal of employee & employer PF balance upon leaving service. | Minimum 2 months of unemployment after leaving job. |
| Form 10C (Pension Withdrawal) | Withdrawal of Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) accumulated balance. | Service period between 6 months and 9.5 years. |
Mandatory Prerequisites for Online Claim Submission
- Aadhaar Verified: Your Aadhaar must be linked to your UAN and marked as verified in the KYC section.
- Bank Account Seeded & Digitally Signed: Your bank account number and IFSC must be approved by your employer via digital signature.
- PAN Linked: If total PF balance exceeds ₹50,000 and total service is under 5 years, linking your PAN reduces TDS from 34.6% to 20% (or 0% with Form 15G/15H).
- Date of Exit Marked: For final PF settlement (Form 19/10C), your employer or you must mark your Date of Exit on the member portal.
