Understanding the Permanent Account Number (PAN)

A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department under the supervision of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). It is a mandatory financial KYC document required for opening bank accounts, receiving taxable income, making real estate transactions, purchasing vehicles, and filing Income Tax Returns.

How to Apply for a Physical PAN or Request Corrections (Form 49A / CSF)

If you require a physical plastic PAN card or need to correct spelling errors in your name, father's name, or date of birth to match your Aadhaar, apply through Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL:

  • Visit onlineservices.tin.egov-nsdl.com or pan.utiitsl.com.
  • Select Application Type: “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data” (or “New PAN - Indian Citizen Form 49A”).
  • Fill in personal details, tick the check-boxes for fields requiring correction, and provide your existing 10-digit PAN.
  • Choose paperless submission via Aadhaar e-KYC & e-Sign (no physical documents needed).
  • Pay the statutory government processing fee of ₹107 online.
  • Track your application status using the 15-digit acknowledgement number until delivery by Speed Post.

Mandatory Aadhaar-PAN Linking Guidelines

Under Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961, linking PAN with Aadhaar is mandatory for all Indian citizens. An inoperative PAN leads to higher TDS deductions (20%), blocked tax refunds, and banking restrictions. You can check your linkage status on incometax.gov.in > Link Aadhaar Status.
